TUESDAY
Bell Work:
Put in order from greatest mass to least mass. (dkg, cg, mg, kg, dg)
Lesson:
Today we learned about volume and how to accurately measure volumes of liquids, regular shaped solids and irregular shaped solids.
Liquids: We use graduated cylinders to measure liquid volumes. Important things to always remember when using a graduated cylinder is to determine the value of the graduations (lines) on the graduated cylinder. Next make sure the graduated cylinder is placed on a level surface, always look "eye level" at the liquid and take the reading at the bottom of the meniscus (curve).
Regular shaped solid (square/rectangular box): Use a ruler, meter stick or tape measure. In our class, we will measure in centimeters. The formula is V = L x W x H
The units of measurement for the volume of a regular shaped solid is cubic centimeters.
Irregular Shaped /Solid (jagged rock): We use Water Displacement to measure the volume of an irregular shaped object. Step 1: Use a graduated cylinder, add water and take a reading of the water volume. Step 2: Add the irregular shaped object to the water and cylinder. Take a reading of the rock and water. Step 3: Find the difference between the two volumes. (volume of water and rock) minus (volume of water) = volume of rock
We filled out packet paper #5 VOLUME
*Reading a Triple Beam Balance home work is due today!
